Why I never had a raspberry patch
We are the couple who cried, “We’re Moving!”
Since we came here to our “starter house” in the luxurious bedroom community of Saint Paul’s Rockin’ East Side, we have figured it was just a matter of time before we moved. It would be a big house. It would have a big yard. It would be in a quiet town. It would have a mailbox at the end of a long driveway.
Two children in our three bedroom, one and a half bath home was nice. Three was an adjustment. Four was a challenge.
Five children here is an adventure; an accomplishment!
About each year the topic of moving comes up. Maybe we’ll see a house for sale and start running the numbers. Lots of times it’s been possible, if this house were “ready to sell” - which it never is because we’ve been too busy out-growing it to get it ready.
And every summer I think, maybe we’ll plant raspberries. Wouldn’t that be nice to have raspberries? Lots of raspberries!
But I just couldn’t spend the money and time on berry bushes that wouldn’t bear fruit for two years. I figured, “I need other stuff now. Besides, in two years we’ll probably be living somewhere else.”
But we haven’t moved, and I never planted my berry patch. Until…
The other day a friend - a very wonderful, helpful, and generous friend - said I could have some of her raspberry canes. (It ended up being about 16!) She said that instead of mowing down the ones that relentlessly spread, she had been waiting for God to tell her who to give them to. (He picked me!)
Yesterday I went to her house to get them, and some of her spare strawberry plants, too. (Um, about 15!) THEN she offered to come back to my house and help me plant them all!
And what might be the best part, because of their size and age, we’ll probably get to enjoy their fruit next summer!
… if we haven’t moved by then.

I don’t remember giving you any raspberry bushes! And I’m a he not a she. (Mental note: Maybe Helen is referring to someone else. Hmmm. Let’s see. Very wonderful. Me. Hepful. Me also. Generous. Yep it’s me. Helen must’ve thought I gave her all those nice things. It’s probably one of her other friends. Although, not as great as I am.)
