&lt;p&gt;The "fences" you wrote about - would it be prying too much to ask you to talk about them? Are they like 'groundrules' for opposite-sex friendships or something? I've had to manage my friendships very carefully, since nearly all of my very closest friends are women. My girlfriends have often had issues with this, and while we manage to work it out, it can be a challenge indeed.&lt;/p&gt;
