Good Friday thoughts
My favorite holiday is Easter. Think of it: Jesus rising from the dead. He laid down His life and He took it back up again. Wow. He triumphed over His own death and didn’t stop there; for “whosoever will” all Death died on Good Friday and Life itself was renewed on Resurrection Sunday.
I didn’t grow up in a Christian home - not even a particularly religious one - so we never gave any thought to Good Friday; and on Easter we stayed home, found eggs and ate mom’s pretty bunny shaped cake. When God transformed me at age 22, I just fell in love with Easter. It rose to the top of my holiday hierarchy and has stayed there ever since.
Bunnies and eggs notwithstanding, we can keep the focus on God much more easily at Easter than at Christmastime. I really enjoy how peaceful a day Easter Sunday is, partly because the way we celebrate takes very little preparation. Over the years I have wondered if we should make a bigger deal over it, but I am very glad it’s stayed simple. The ham dinner is so easy and I do one giant Easter basket for the whole family. Ah, rest.
It’s 9:52 on Good Friday morning and all I’ve purchased so far are some egg dying kits which were on sale a few weeks ago. We won’t color eggs until tomorrow, but I want to get my shopping done today. I expect to find a decent selection of spiral hams and candy in the stores this afternoon; but if I wait until tomorrow all the malted milk robins eggs will be gone, and we can’t have that.
